The latest market research figures for the printing industry have shown that Epson is currently running top of the printer manufacturer sales chart.

Epson is currently top of the printer manufacturer sales listing, with five of the top ten best selling inkjet printers of the summer.

The full results from market research firm GfK (http://www.gfk.co.uk) were:
1) Epson Stylus C48,
2) Epson Stylus Photo R220,
3) Lexmark Z735,
4) Epson Stylus D68,
5) Canon Pixma iP4200,
6) Epson Stylus D88,
7) Lexmark Z617,
Epson Picturemate 100,
9) HP Deskjet 3940,
10) HP Photosmart 8050

Three of these models, the Stylus D68,D88 and Stylus photo R220 use individual ink cartridges for each colour, allowing replacement of colours as they run out. Individual cartridges for these models are available for under 5 from the likes of Cartridge Concept (http://www.cartcon.co.uk/products/Inkjet_Cartridges/Epson/ ) and specialist highstreet outlets. With Epson’s continued success in restricting sales of compatible cartridges their position in the UK market looks set to grow.

Canons’ only entrant into the top 10 is positioned at 5, with the Pixma iP4200 which also uses individual ink cartridges and although these are more expensive than Epson have the benefit of having a larger capacity.

Lexmark take the opposite tack with the Z735 printer at No.3, this printer uses only one cartridge, which is appropriately called No.1. This cartridge contains all the colours in the one unit, making replacement a simple but possibly frequent occurrence as individual colour run out. This appears to be a fact which Lexmark seem to be aware of, as shown by the recent introduction of a twin pack.

Hewlett Packard fills both slots 9 and 10 with their Deskjet 3940 and Photosmart 8050 printer respectively. Both of these printers maintain the middle ground, using separate black and colour cartridges, while a third separate Photo cartridge is available for the Photosmart printer.

The latest introductions from all these manufacturers have shown a similar trend with both Epson and Canon favouring individual colour cartridges which can be replaced singularly whenever required. Hewlett Packard has however currently restricted this configuration to their higher priced Photosmart models, preferring to join Lexmark in providing the two/three cartridge set up for the bulk of their range.

The cost of printer ink is the sole concern for anyone using a printer. Buying printer ink online will save you both cost and time without compromising on quality.

The first step is to choose the type of printer ink you are looking for. It will depend on the purpose for which you use your printer. For plain black text compatible and remanufactured cartridges will work well. However, for printing photos and graphics, brand new cartridges will be the right choice. Printer ink refill kits are also available. You can also buy brand new printer cartridges from Hewlett Packard, Lexmark, Canon or Epson.

Online printer suppliers have their websites and it advised that you visit at least four or five before making your purchase. The suppliers offer various price discounts and a visit to different websites will help in making the right choice. Prices offered by the online sellers are considerably less than those at the retail stores. It is best if you visit a website offering cartridges from various manufacturers. This way it will be easier to compare the prices. Printer ink is normally delivered free of cost or at minimum shipping expenses.

When you are buying online, it is not possible to have a first hand look at the product. It is advised that you always buy from a reputed printer ink dealer. Reputed dealers offer guarantees and securities on their services. Check whether your online supplier offers guarantee on their quality and service. Faulty printer cartridges are usually replaced free of cost. Buy cartridges that are compatible with your printer. Incompatible cartridges will not give you good printer quality and may also damage your printer. Compatible cartridges are not available for many Hewlett Packard and Lexmark printers. What causes problems with print quality? This article explores some of the problems and looks at possible solutions.

 

People often think that when they have problems with print quality that it is the cause of the ink cartridge. They are particularly prone to think this when they have purchased compatible ink cartridges or refilled ink cartridges.
However this is not always the case and the problem could lie elsewhere. To explore this a little further we can look at some of the problems that occur.

First of all here are some of the problems:

- Half of the page is not printer out.
- Irregular print quality meaning that one page is OK and the next one is smudged.
- The print is faded and or a general low quality.
- The pink or the blue in the colour comes out wrong.
- Broken lines through the print

Where half of the page is not printed out - either the top half , or the print stops half way across the page. This is probably not caused by the ink cartridge at all, but by not having the proper driver installed on your computer.

When you buy a new printer it may be more advanced than your existing computer and may not have the relevant drivers installed. This is easily fixed by downloading the proper driver from the manufactures website. They are generally free.

If you are experiencing problems with a generally low quality or faded print rather than blame the ink cartridge look at the printer setting. Do this by going to the print command - File - Print - Properties - Main - Quality Option.

This last command of Quality Option allows you to set the type of print you want. If it is set at "text" the quality will not be as good as "text and photo". Therefore by enabling the photo options you will improve the print quality.

It is worth remembering that the "text" facility is a very good way of saving ink. This setting is fine for drafts and other documents where the print quality is not important.

The quality of the paper also impacts on the quality of the print and if you want top quality print then similar quality paper is required.

Where the wrong colour ink comes out this is likely to be caused by either an empty ink cartridge or a poor quality ink cartridge. If the ink cartridge is new then either one of the cylinders has not been filled, has been filled with the wrong colour or it is a faulty ink cartridge. In this case it is advisable to return the ink cartridge to your supplier.

Broken lines in the print probably mean that the ink cartridge is empty, or if you have just replaced it , faulty.
